There seems to be quite a bit of confusion online about what exactly “Assisted GPS” on Apple’s iOS devices is, especially regarding navigation-based app requirements. It can be a bit complicated, but understanding what it means could help you decide which iPad to buy.

For developers, the Core Location Framework in iOS can use the onboard GPS, cell, or Wi-Fi radios to find the user’s current longitude and latitude. Each one has a different degree of accuracy and uses a different amount of battery life.  This abstraction allows developers to write code without exactly knowing what capabilities the iOS device has available to it.  So, for the most part, developers don’t always have strict requirements where GPS capabilities are concerned.  But as a consumer, you want to know exactly what you’re getting for your money.

Let me say amazon rocks. it is always the first and usually the last place i shop! this review was written on june 16,2011. i just bought an ipad2, 16gb, wifi black for 499.88, plus 12.02 for 2 day shipping, no tax (california) for a total of $510.90. i ordered it on june 11, and am now promised it in two days, june 18. ****new iPad2 7 days $510.90 out the door.**** let me compare. apple headquarters price (offered me $10 discount) was $537.79 free standard shipping (no options) estimated arrival 2-3 weeks. you can’t pick it up at local apple retailer. apple store in stock ~ $546 out the door today ($499 plus california recycle fee $6, plus tax). ebay looked promising but i couldn’t win for less than at least $525 plus shipping, i tried. amazon’s best price is $564.28 with standard shipping. i found my retailer last week googling: iPad2 16gb wifi black. the retailer took my order and said they thought it would be a week but no guarantee. they took my order but did not charge my card. it looks like they followed through. soon maybe i’ll write a product review. good luck shoppers, kent ps please vote if this review was helpful. contact me if i can be of help.
